Diabetes, heart problems and the like are not just human issues and should your pooch binge beyond its means, it could well develop one or more of these extremely unpleasant disorders. As such, the team at Hills are prepared to guide you owners in a bid to help combat such problems with their new Weight Loss tips page.

Muzzling Your Dog

quentin | April 11th, 2010

If you are thinking about muzzling your dog to protect yourself, your pet insurance and other people, consider this first.

Although muzzling doesn’t hurt dogs, it can easily put them under a great degree of stress. Muzzling keeps a dog’s mouth shut, effectively removing what we consider the dog’s main form of attack, but what the dog considers its main form of defence… Remove an animal’s ability to defend itself and, well, it doesn’t take an expert to tell you’re not exactly going to calm it down, that’s for sure! Consider Pet Insurance This Christmas

quentin | November 20th, 2009

When it comes to buying your dog a Christmas present, it is very common for people to choose decorative gifts, toys or food-based treats. These are all good ideas and the food gifts especially get dogs very worked up when it comes to opening their presents!

Dog Insurance

However, if you don’t already have dog insurance, I would strongly advise you to consider buying this for your dog this year. At a few pounds per week, dog insurance can cover your pet from a huge range of illnesses and accidents, protecting both your dog and your bank account. Although it may seem cold to talk about money when a dog’s health is in question, the simple fact is that times are hand and many people simply cannot afford to pay vet’s bills when their dog needs surgery – as almost every dog will at some point in their life.

Chewy toys make be more fun than a collection of paperwork this Christmas but, when your dog does fall ill or get involved in an accident, that dog insurance policy will feel like a hundred Christmas presents wrapped into one! Not only is this a huge help when the inevitable illness and injuries occur, it will also serve to offer peace of mind when your dog starts acting strangely; pet insurance can cover visits to the vet for checkups – meaning you can take your dog in as often as you need.

Buy a meaningful present this Christmas – invest in pet insurance.

Dog Christmas Presents

quentin | November 15th, 2009

A recent poll claims that around 50% of all pet owners will be buying their pet a Christmas present this year. Today the Dog Health Blog asks whether you will be buying your dog a present this year and, if so, what will you be buying? If not, why not?

dog

I, for one, tend to buy my dogs Christmas presents – but I’ve never been sure why. I think it’s because I feel as though they’re missing out on the fun – as if dogs are bothered about whether they have a personalised drinking bowel or not! To be honest, buying dogs presents is probably just an excuse to buy ourselves presents; the designer collar looks nicer to us, but I’m pretty sure the dogs aren’t bothered either way! As long as it’s filled with food, they’ll love it! Last year I upgraded my dog insurance and put that down as being their gift; they weren’t thrilled at the time, but Suzy was grateful when she had to have an ear operation in June.

Popular presents for dogs include balls and throwing toys, tuggable toys and chews, as well as dog treats like special dog chocolate they can safely eat – again, as if dogs prefer eating chocolate to left-over steak pieces! I tend to buy my dogs new toys they can play with together; for the sake of varying the games we play more than anything else.

Behavioural Treatment

quentin | September 7th, 2009

Dog are susceptible to a large range of behavioural problems that can potentially ruin their relationship with their owner; over-activeness, under-activeness, disobedience and aggression are all problems that often lead to dogs being abandoned. Identifying what is causing the problems is often the hardest part in the struggle to overcome behavioural problems, but sadly not all dog insurance policies cover the cost of diagnosis and treatment.

exercise

Luckily, there are a few simple ways to help control your dog’s behaviour that don’t require lots of money. For one thing, make sure your dog is getting enough exercise! Having too much energy or being bored frequently leads to dogs displaying a wide range of destructive behaviour. If your dog keeps damaging things around the house, ask yourself whether you’re putting enough effort into giving your pet the right amount of exercise before you lose your temper.

Secondly, neutering dogs is a very old and popular technique that works wonders in reducing aggression and inappropriate marking. For those who are uncomfortable with the idea (and there are lots of you out there), it should come as a comfort that patience and suitable training can also work wonders for improving these kinds of behaviour.
